Enjoying Gluten Free Baked Goods

With the rapidly increasing number of individuals coping with food intolerances, sensitivities and allergies, there is a corresponding need for wholesome, delicious appropriate food to meet their needs. Individuals with celiac disease, or food allergies to gluten or wheat, are growing populations for whom finding good tasting baked goods has been challenging.

Celiac disease is when an immune response is triggered by your body as a reaction to consuming gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye and barley. If you, or someone you know, suffer from Celiac disease, following a gluten-free diet is vital to controlling the resulting inflammation in the small intestine, weight loss, diarrhea and inability to absorb essential nutrients.

An allergy to wheat or gluten is a separate diagnosis with different symptoms. Hives, trouble breathing, nasal congestion or even life-threatening anaphylaxis reactions can occur.

If you have to follow a gluten free diet, you have to avoid products made with such grains as wheat, rye, barley, triticale, bulgur, durum flour, and in most cases oats (due to the possibility of cross contamination with wheat).

Substituting the baked goods enjoyed daily with breads, cookies, rolls, and muffins with a pleasing texture and taste can be a challenge when making that change.

In 2004, Grainharvest Breadhouse began the Circle of Life Bakery to meet that need! New recipes were developed to address the alteration in texture, new natural wholesome ingredients and sweeteners – for instance, nuts, coconut, honey, maple syrup - were incorporated with great success.

If you are looking for dairy-free, egg-free or sugar-free baked goods, there are many items for you to choose from!

To ensure that no cross-contamination occurs, all products and baked goods produced in Circle of Life Bakery are made in a separate facility from other Grainharvest Breadhouse products.
